Part 5. Porto to Barcelona

Updated: Jan 23, 2019

My next planned segment really gets down to the business side of things.

1,580km riding and 12,220m vertical climbing on my way to Barcelona from Porto will take me through some amazing countryside, cities and towns.

This section of the trip will be one of the most difficult with some crazy climbing both getting out of Portugal and on my way in and out of Madrid – but some time spent with my family in Porto before continuing will recharge my batteries.

The cities and towns I will travel through include:

  • Espinho, Portugal

  • Aveiro, Portugal

  • Coimbra, Portugal (it is from here that I start heading inland towards Spain)

  • Coria, Spain

  • Placencia, Spain

  • Toledo, Spain

  • Madrid, Spain

  • Albacete, Spain

  • Valencia, Spain

  • Taragona, Spain

  • Castello de la Plana, Spain

  • Barcelona, Spain

The contour profile below gives a bit of an indication of the climbing involved.

From Valencia I hug the Spanish coast until I reach Barcelona, and from there I will head inland.

The list below shows the type of road surfaces I could expect to encounter.
