An early start meant navigating through morning traffic in Budapest to leave the city and find the cycle track in grey skies and gloomy weather after yesterday’s lovely sunny day of rest in Budapest.

Threatening rain clouds set the tone and after 32km of climbing and dealing with windy conditions the Crazybikeguys stopped in Etyek for a nourishing lunch of pea and vegetable soup and an unidentifiable kind of cabbage and pork bake.

Not all the places that the boys have found have been that open or friendly to tourists and they had previously stopped at a place where the owner didn’t have a card machine, wouldn’t acknowledge them or even communicate with them. Life lessons on communication, tolerance and travelling in foreign countries being learnt all the time.

Thankfully there are always “glimmers” – friendly staff, willingness to communicate using Google translate making lunch a much more pleasant experience.

Today’s ride from Budapest involved a fair amount of climbing and distance and Julian wasn’t feeling great – suffering from Springtime allergies whilst riding in the countryside isn’t that much fun, but he was strong on the bike and managed all the climbing and pushed through. Grant does lament his bygone abilities to climb much faster than he does now, but he is just accepting being a little slower these days!

A few countryside vineyard stops to look at the most fascinating bird boxes that all faced in the same direction, looking at interesting wooden sculptures and enjoying the varied scenery made it an interesting but really tough day on the bike.

Julian is learning about the mental challenges that come from spending so much time going through physical endurance and being all alone in your head with your thoughts whilst still having to concentrate and pushing through even though he isn’t feeling his best. By the end of the day being tired, hungry and wind blown got the better of him and we’re all hoping today will be a much better day!

The accommodation in the small town that they stopped in had a shared bathroom which was a very interesting addition to the travelling experience, but it was clean and spacious and very near the supermarket and eateries, so all ended well!

Today’s ride is a much shorter trip, and with rain forecast, we’re all hoping that its done in a short time!
