15km with 35 m of climbing
A mini rest day with a short cycle was on the cards for today as the boys left Cakovec in adverse conditions with a swirling headwind trying to ride in between two predicted storms, so the focus was getting indoors before the next storm hit. The night before was windy, stormy and wet. The conditions were made worse by the fact that the route was mainly on the shoulder of a busy road and between the wind and cycling alongside traffic, it was quite unpleasant.

Both Julian and Grant’s Garmin watches are pleading for rest days, and keep sending them reminders, so they semi obliged today.
As Grant says, the bikes are craving attention and they are “talking” to each other with squeaks and grinding noises and groans, but until they have some time in Zagreb to do proper bike maintenance, some lubrication and sweet talking is going to have to be enough.
Both boys need some down time and Grant has a cough which is lingering and the afternoon nap that he had today was a much-needed restorative rest.
It’s important to note that after every cycle both walk an average of 8-10km around whatever place they happen to be in to relax their muscles and get the lactic acid to be processed, so between the cycling and the walking there’s a lot of energy being used up every day. The weather hasn’t been much help in the last while and today was just about staying warm and dry and trying to not let the exhaustion take hold as they have a huge climb to get to Zagreb tomorrow.
The town of Varazdin is beautiful, the Easter decorations and markets are in full swing and their stay in the old part of town was pretty uneventful but pleasant with a fabulous dinner and the mandatory beer consumption- I see we are definitely staying away from “apple spritzes”!
