Warsaw to Radom - 120km done and dusted!

The day started with steering column issues on Julian’s bike and dealing with a myriad of road works involving dedicated bike paths and road closures, leaving the city of Warsaw in the direction of Radom became a 90-minute exercise and after a latish start and the cold weather it seemed like it was going to be a very long day!

Thankfully the rain stayed away and cycling on flat terrain allowed a cruising speed of 16km/hour. Once out of the city, the dedicated bike paths were wonderful as they wove through massive birch tree forests and for the majority of the time they didn’t see any people or cars on their ride. They rode through areas dotted with hundreds of fruit trees all on the verge of blossoming in the warmer weather. They stopped at little churches along the route too.

Alas…it wasn’t without some difficulty! Julian tells us the story of this stretch of the route – he likened it to riding through a playground sand track….listen out for the ‘ falling all over the place’…..

It’s been interesting to listen to the end of day voice note as Julian’s observations are quite unique – “My big observation today was that we saw a lot of imported American cars on the road, many tiny supermarkets all over the place and none of the places we passed had names we could pronounce. Nobody speaks English. Also- the strangest thing was that every little town had a mini fire station garage with one firetruck and a scooter parked in front!”

Grant is missing the Southern European coffee and pastry stops that his previous ride had so much of – Poland doesn’t really have the café style coffee stops, so they’ve had to make do with a Starbucks replacement at the end of the day in the bigger urban area stops.

After 120 kms ( phew!) they found their apartment in the town and went for an 8km walk to get rid of the lactic acid buildup in their muscles and stocked up on eggs, cheese, yoghurt, baguettes and salty snacks for the road tomorrow and went out for what I would term a heart attack on a plate – massive burgers with all the trimmings and the never forgotten craft ale ( just for Grant).

We had a video call whilst we were having our dinner with a very tired Grant just before he went to bed.

Tomorrow is a lighter day – colder weather predicted, a bit of climbing and 60km ride to Kielce.

Loving the virtual travel! Well done, guys... that sounded tough! Hope today has been kinder to you. Take care & rest well after a hot shower & more craft beers & 'heart attacks on a plate' (brilliant, Liz! 😂 ). xx
